GUIDE

House rules, your way.

Every family plays Luddo a little differently. At a private table the host picks the house rules in the lobby, and everyone sees them before the first roll.

Four ways to start

  • Classic: The game as everyone knows it
  • Quick: One piece out to start, two home to win
  • Master: Capture someone before any piece goes home
  • Family: Thirty seconds a turn, so nobody feels rushed

One change to Classic

Classic can also take any one of these on its own:

  • Blockades: Two of your pieces on a square stop everyone else
  • No extra roll for getting home: only a six or a capture earns another roll.
  • A different turn timer: 10 or 30 seconds a turn instead of 15.

Play as partners

Red & yellow against green & blue. A side wins when all eight of its pieces are home.

A match clock

Add a 5- or 10-minute clock to any table.

  • No clock: The match runs until someone wins
  • 5 minutes · 10 minutes: When time is up, whoever got furthest wins

Special tables

  • Mensch ärgere Dich nicht (German): 40 fields, four goal fields each, and no safe squares.
  • Halloween: The Graveyard Night board, ghost pieces and the rooftop at night, for everyone at the table.
  • Diwali: The Diwali board, diya pieces and the rooftop lit for the festival, for everyone at the table.

What every table plays by

  • Roll a 6 and you roll again straight away, before moving. Once you roll something else, move by each roll in the order you rolled them.
  • Three 6s in a row cancel out: none of them moves, and your turn ends.
  • Land on an opponent’s piece to send it back to their base, along with any others there.
  • The star squares, including every start square, are safe: no one can be captured on them.
  • Reaching the center takes an exact roll. A roll that would go past it can’t move that piece.

Not every change goes with every other. The lobby greys out what can’t be combined, and the server checks too.
